UK Regions
For statistical purposes, the UK is divided into 12 region:
- Scotland
- Wales
- Northern Ireland
- North East
- North West
- Yorkshire and the Humber
- East Midlands
- West Midlands
- East of England
- London
- South East
- South West
The regions in England vary greatly in both land area and population size. The South East of England has the largest population, with 9,379,833 inhabitants, whilst the North East only has a population of 2,683,040, accounting for 5% of the English population.
Whilst London covers just 1% of the land area of England, it represent 16% of the population, with 8,866,180 inhabitants.
Although English regions no longer hold devolved powers, they remain an essential level of geography for statistical reporting and analysis.
