The number of fatalities on Great Britain’s roads fell by 5% in 2023, with 1,624 deaths reported, according to the latest data from the Department for Transport (DfT). These figures, derived from the STATS19 reporting system, provide a comprehensive overview of road traffic casualties, including breakdowns by severity, road user group, age, and sex.
In addition to the reduction in fatalities, there were 29,711 reported casualties classified as killed or seriously injured (KSI), a figure that remains largely unchanged from 2022. Meanwhile, total casualties of all severities decreased by 2%, with 132,977 recorded incidents.
The data reflects a gradual return to pre-pandemic trends, with overall casualties continuing a steady decline observed since 1979, albeit at a slower pace since 2010. Motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable road users, recording the highest casualty rates per billion miles travelled, while motorways continue to be the safest road type.
