Welcome to the third edition of Public Data Insights, our monthly summary of the latest data and statistical releases from various government departments and public bodies, all with a focus on sub-national insights.

Road Traffic Casualties (2023)

There were 1,624 fatalities from road collisions, a 5% decrease from 2022, per the Department for Transport. Casualties of all severities decreased by 2%, with 132,977 cases reported. Fatalities among motorcyclists saw the largest drop, down by 10%. Reported by local authority, Haringey in London reported the highest collision rate in the country with 3,056 collisions per billion motor miles.

NHS Referral to Treatment Waiting Times Data (July 2024)

The number of RTT pathways where a patient was waiting to start treatment at the end of July was 7.6 million, with an estimated 6.4 million unique patients on the list.

In 58.8% of cases the patient had been waiting up to 18 weeks, and therefore did not meet the 92% standard. In 107 cases patients were waiting more than 104 weeks.

Unemployment by Parliamentary Constituency (September 2024)

The UK Claimant Count for August 2024 increased on the month and on the year, to 1.792 million people. The Claimant Count measures the number of people who are receiving a benefit principally for the reason of being unemployed.

The Claimant Count statistics are published amongst a wider Labour Market Overview by the Office for National Statistics, which also includes employment, economic inactivity and Real Earnings.

Winter Fuel Payment Statistics for Winter 2023 to 2024

The number of Winter Fuel Payments recipients increased by 214,000 from winter 2022/23 to winter 2023/24 to a total of 11.6 million. The number of households receiving the payment rose by 140,000 to a total of 8.5 million.

These figures include the 34,300 recipients who live in the European Economic Area. 

This is the first year that Winter Fuel Payment Statistics have been classed as ‘Official Statistics’, having been reviewed in Spring 2023. 

Changes to the Winter Fuel Payment will lead to a reduction in the number of people eligible to receive the payment. The Department for Work and Pensions estimates that 1.5 million individuals in 1.3 million households in England and Wales will receive the payment in winter 2024/25.

Mixed-Sex Accommodation Breach Data

3,848 breaches of the Mixed-Sex Accommodation (MSA) guidance were reported in July 2024, compared to 1,275 in July 2019. The breach rate was 2.2 per 1,000 finished consultant episodes (FCEs), up from 0.7 in July 2019. 63 acute Trusts (47%) reported no sleeping accommodation breaches.

Reported by Integrated Care Board, NHS Bath North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire reported the highest breach rate at 12 per 1,000.
