Since our last update at the end of March, a number of prominent defections have dominated the headlines.
The MP for Dover, Natalie Elphicke, defected from the Conservatives to Labour – prompting confusion on both sides of the House. The MP for Suffolk and North Ipswich, Dan Poulter, defected from the Conservatives to Labour a week earlier. They join the MP for Bury South, Christian Wakeford, as former members of the governing party to defect to the opposition in this parliament. Such defections are incredibly rare. Not since 1995 has a Conservative crossed the bench to defect to the main opposition party.
Nadhim Zahawi is the latest MP to announce that they’ll be permanently retiring and not standing at the next general election. The former Chancellor and Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon stated that the time is right for “a new, energetic Conservative” to take over.
