This years GCSE results have once again highlighted the North South divide in educational achievement in England.
Using Ofqual data, we have visualised the percentage of students who achieved a grade 7 (or grade A) by region, between 2019 and 2022.
This is the first time since 2019 that GCSE exams were sat in person by students after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted exams in 2020 and 2021. Comparing results between 2019 and 2022, overall GCSE results are higher with outcomes at grade 7 and above reaching 26.0% compared with 20.6% in 2019.
For the forth year in a row, students in the southern half of the country achieved higher results than those in the north.
